HUCOMIN FINAL PROJECT:
DLSU DEMOGRAPHICS MAPPING

This final project entails exploration of the various ways mapping can be used to illustrate and report data. But this also entails data gathering and survey. This requires attention to detail, persistence in data collection and critical analysis of data. This is going to be a challenging test to you as IS students.

Objective: The project aims to study a specific demographics around DLSU Manila through the use of an interactive mapping application developed and interpreted by the Hucomin students.
Mechanics:
1. Each Hucomin group will choose a specific demography to be studied. For example, it can be:
a. Entertainment
b. Student residences
c. Home Services
d. Financial services
e. Dining and food outlets
f. Education and training
2. The project entails creation of an interactive map using Flash & image maps or the Google map. Each group is to make a proposal to be submitted on Mar. 3 class time. Demography to be studied will have to be approved.
3. The project has DLSU Manila as the center of the map to be analyzed. The mapping project includes a 3-kilometer circumference proximity around DLSU Manila.
4. The project entails reporting the business or services’ establishments in a summary list. Reports should be meaningful, can be printed and viewed together with the map.
5. A simple menu will have to be created to allow the viewer to see individualized or collective information.
6. The project will have to be uploaded in the web. Your class adviser will announce where it can be uploaded.
7. The project will be presented on March 22, class time. The group may select one or two members of the group to present the project.

This activity is intended to serve as an introduction to the topic user-centered design.

Form your group, select two members' mobile phones to be analyzed, compared and contrasted in this activity. Perform and answer the following on a yellow paper.

1. Identify the two mobile phones to be compared (example, Nokia N70 and Samsung Omnia)
Draw the main interface of each and include the main function labels.

2. Test the phones in terms of basic functionality and efficiency. Put your evaluation in a table (similar to the table shown) and apply a 0-3 stars rating.

GUIDELINES FOR VISITING JHLIS-BATAAN

WELCOME TO JAIME HILARIO INTEGRATED SCHOOL-La Salle.

We are a school that seeks to make the care of the environment our major thrust. It is for this purpose that we educate our young people so that they will have the competency to become good stewards of God’s creation. We thank you for your partnership with us and hope that your stay will be pleasant and enriching.

1. Take noting but photos. We discourage the bringing home of shells, corals and other sea creatures for souvenirs. Beautiful as they may seem, these souvenirs are the home of some sea creatures who in turn are the partners of other sea creatures in the web of life.

2. Leave nothing but your footprints. We discourage the use of disposables such as Styrofoam food containers, paper plates, plastic cups and utensils. Should you find the need to make use of these materials, we request that you take them back with you when you leave.

3. We make attempts to manage the solid waste in the community through proper waste segregation. Green bins are for biodegradables such as food, fruit and vegetable peelings and dead leaves. There is a compost pit in the school where these materials are placed. Red bins are for recyclables like plastic water bottles and zesto packs. A Materials Recovery Facility is also in place to make these available for recycling. Blue bins are for disposables like candy wrappers, crumpled pieces of paper and tissue paper.

4. We wish to be good neighbors with those whom we share the community with. Clothing that is simple and appropriate to interaction with our neighbors is thus recommended. Boisterous behavior, use of foul language are discouraged. Smoking and drinking are not allowed in the school or in the community. At all times, respectful behavior towards our neighbors is to be observed.

5. Should you wish to make donations to the students or the community, we request that you coordinate with the school Principal or the school’s Community Organizer. This will ensure that your contributions are well-integrated into the plans of the school and the community. Likewise, as we wish to avoid a dole-out mentality from creeping in, it would be good to make the donations to the school or to the Sito Looc Municipal Fishermans’ Association rather than to individual students or community members.

6. Should photos and videos of students or the community be integral to your program, we request that you inform the school Principal or Community Organizer. It would be ideal if there is one designated photographer or videographer for your group.

7. Come to the community ready to give and to receive. Be ready to share your gifts and talents but be ready as well to welcome the gifts and talents of those you will meet.

For weekend or overnight trips, our school can accommodate groups of 15 to 20 persons : We are happy to allow you the use of our Science laboratory for your meals and the AVRoom for your sleeping quarters. Two shower rooms can be made available. Cooking facilities can be made available upon request. The school can make arrangements for your food at P350 per day for three meals. A modest contribution to defray the cost of the facilities used will be appreciated. The Brothers’ house is a private residence.

The Outbound Trip will focus on the Jaime Hilario La Salle Integrated School and performing activities with the students. In preparation to the activities, ALL groups are required to do a research on the assigned topics, and place this discussion in their wikipage. Always consider what will be the impact to environment of the pros/cons of the activity assigned. Each group will be assigned to an elementary grade or high school level.

ISOCREC Classes, please post a comment in this posting to write your group name & section, the name of your Wikipage (ideally the same as the group name) and the names of your group members.

Attend the lecture/seminar on Green Space and/or Water Resources. Make your reflections in the wikipage. One of you should make a synthesis out of the consolidated ideas/insights. This is due on the 27th of September.

2. Sep. 23 is library day. All groups are to get local materials on two items:

a. Protecting the environment--the sea,the river. What is the impact of not helping or not caring for the sea, the land, the coastal areas. How do we protect these areas.

You may also concentrate on water resources management or green space development.

b. How do we educate the people in the community to make them aware of the consequences of negligence? What ICT tools can be used & how do we use them? Example, simulation of water/river pollution--would this help?

Put all the materials in the wikipage. Allot another page for the assessment & analysis. These reading outputs will be used as preparation for the SR requirement.

Selection of debaters

The professor shall randomly select 3 students to form the PRO team, and another 3 to form the CON team.

A student can be selected to be a debater twice in the course of the trimester, but not more. The student’s final grade for class participation will be the average of the points that he or she gets in the two debates.

Conduct of the debate

The debaters will take their places on each side of the platform, with the PRO debaters sitting on the side near the door. In each round, each debater will be given 3 minutes to present his/her arguments. There will be two to three rounds, with the PRO, CON, and PRO team starting the first, second, and third rounds, respectively. Before each round, the teams will be given three minutes to discuss their arguments and strategies.

Grading of the debaters

At the end of the third round, the debaters will be asked to face the blackboard, while the audience will be asked to vote for those whom they think were the best debaters that day. Each student in the audience will vote for exactly two debaters. The students will also be asked to vote for the team that they think gave the best arguments and counter-arguments.

Voting will be by raising of hands. Students will be requested to close their eyes during the voting period.

The debaters will be ranked according to the number of votes they get. The student with the most votes (first place) gets 95 points (out of a hundred); the next student (second place), 90; the next (third place), 85; the next (fourth place), 80; the next (fifth place), 75; and the last (sixth place), 70. In addition, the members of the team that wins will each get additional 5 points. Ties are broken by alphabetically sorting the family names of the debaters concerned.

Students who get the same number of votes will each get the average of the points assigned to the places that they occupy. For example, students A and B get 20 votes each, students C and D get 15 votes each; students E and F, 5 each. Thus, A and B will get 92.5 points each, C and D will get 82.5 points each, and E and F will get 72.5 points each. As another example, say students A and B get 40 votes each, while C to F get none. Then A and B will get 92.5 points each, while C to F will get 77.5 each.

Course Title: Information Technology and Social Responsibility
Description: Information technology and social responsibility is a fresh elective of the Information Systems program. As an elective, it deals in the advance discussions of technology, its impact to the broad range of societal issues such as workforce and organizations; environment, cultural, ethics and IT/IS practices, HCI. Other related issues maybe health, arts, education, and entertainment. The course intends to be an eye-opener to the future IT practitioners on the great importance of social responsibility in the quality of life, nation building and development. And IT has a responsive and empowering role to take in this importance.

The course also encourages peer learning and collaboration among the working groups in the discussions, in the activities and in the output delivery.

7.0 IT AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY BEST PRACTICES CASE PROJECT

The case project entails probing on a company engaging in social responsibility. The study groups will have to investigate how the company carries out its social responsibilities, the leadership exhibited and the level of participation of the workforce. The output is a 5minute documentary video uploaded in Youtube.

Proposals are to be submitted on the 3rd week of the term.

8.0 FIELD TRIP IN BAGAC, BATAAN

The field trip is an opportunity for the two sections to engage in worthwhile social work and advocacy. The student groups may opt to deliver any of the following tasks:

1. Computer setup and software installation
2. Beach shore clean drive
3. Riverside clean drive
4. Mini-concert of environment songs
5. Food, transportation, logistics & documentation
6. Disaster preparedness in the community

Other related activities would be kite creation; building small boats; shell collection for a possible shell museum.

The field trip is a whole day activity. It is expected all the major activities are to take place in parallel except for the mini-concert and processing of tasks that will wrap up the whole day set of activities.

About SMS Reporting

SMS as a mobile tool is supposed to be utilized in various ways. One of this is to account people, know their status and whereabouts. Even if our class is not a volunteer's group, we can actually use the simple tool and approach to account our class members. In this case if an emergency takes place, we can actually help each other. In getting information of a situation or reporting special incidents, again we are engaging a very practical use of the SMS.

Kian raised the concern of not having a prepaid load. Jaimmie raised the issue of not having a telco signal. These things should not prevent us from doing the right thing at the fastest way we can-- i.e. account our members and report the status of your group or your team. And on this instances, group leaders have to follow instructions accordingly.

Last Tuesday evening's exercise turned out poor. There were group who were able to report almost midnight. I fell asleep waiting for the responses. And there were some who did not follow instructions. So we will improve our SMS reporting in the coming days.

MOFTECH FINAL PROJECT: A RESEARCH PAPER ON THE
AUTOMATED ELECTION SYSTEMS FOR THE PHILIPPINES IN 2010

Each group is required to do a research and critical analysis of the Republic Act 9369 and the selected topic below.

Research Topic Selections

I. Comparative Evaluation of at least three countries that have conducted automated elections in the past five years. Include a web survey among Southeast Asian countries on how they conduct their elections.

II. Technology Scan of the PCOS (SAES 1800) machines. What are the features of the machine, what company will produce it, what other countries have used it, and how did Smartmatic came about with the basic design components of the machine. Include a profile of Smartmatic as an IT firm.

III. Process Simulation of the Traditional Voting (2004) and the Proposed Voting Scheme (2010). Using workflow diagrams, simulate the processes of Registration and Casting of Votes to the Submission of Votes to the Machines to the Closing session of the Voting—the old method, the 2004 elections and the proposed 2010 AES.

IV. Comprehensive Evaluation of the Canvassing of Votes, the 2004 and the proposed 2010 elections. Use workflow diagrams, data flow diagrams and/or design architecture to show the flow of canvassing and transmission. Include estimate of length of time of canvassing. Identify the weak spots/areas where cheating may take place and recommend measures how to avoid this undesirable incident.

This case study will give the group a chance to conceptualize an e-commerce site.
The group may use dreamweaver, html, photoshop or other tools to design the interface of the e-commerce site.

Read the e-Lancer Case, pages 102-103.

1.Given the scenarios encountered by Channon, you are now tasked by Terence.net to design an e-commerce site for Metro Manila freelance IT workers following the model of www.e-Lance.com. This is worth 30 points.

Here are the specs you have to produce:

a.main page with a catchy label/name for the site including a short desc of what the site is all about. Log-in & other tools/widgets may be included here.
b.Create a page showing the work list or table.
c.Create a personal page of the freelancer & include useful tools for her/him.

2.Read the case example on General Mills, pages 104-105.
Your group is tasked to design a web interface for General Mills that will assign and track the trucks that will deliver goods in different supermarkets. This is worth 30pts.

Here are the specs you have to produce.

2.1.Gather at least two relevant web pages of an existing logistics or distribution or trucking services. One or both of these pages will be modeled for your interface.
2.2.Design a one-page interface that will allow:
a.assignment of truck/s to a supermarket on specified date/dates;
b.page should show impt details of the user, the client and store location.
2.3.Design a one-page interface that will show the visual map & route of the assigned trucks for that day.

On July 27, you are to submit all the printouts of your web pages.

Welcome Dear Students of MOFTECH!

We had a smooth start with an overview of the importance of MIS, present global trends in doing business, the internet economy and the need for knowledge management and sharing. We heard the reports on the Computer & Communication Trends and the Roles of the CIO and the IS Executives.

New IT Research Projects-3rd term 2008-09

As the new terms starts and with the onset of 2009, I have some new worthwhile projects that hopefully will challenge the students too. I will be presenting these research projects as possible ICT projects of the students too on Jan. 27, 5:00pm at the ISR.

1. As the attempt to work on my first CBMS Data Gathering project jumpstarted last term, another similar project will shape. Following a similar model of creating a web portal to gather CBMS data at the barangay level and utilizing/testing SMS technologies, this time the project will collect data in a Filipino Muslim community.

The Filipino Muslims comprise about 5%-8% of the population and one of the minorities in the country. In Metro Manila and in the nearby Calabarzon, some of them have their own communities already. The project will attempt to gather CBMS data (income, health and education) in one or two of their communities and hopefully, create a model of capturing relevant information that will help lawmakers draw policies on poverty alleviation. If the model works, it can be adapted in other barangays or communities.

The idea on communities as a research topic may be fused to other ICT trend or technology such as web portals, CSCW (computer supported cooperative work) or even social networks and virtual communities. Of course, study groups are expected to read and learn more on the psychology behind communities. There are so many theories on communities or even social interaction.

Within the university, the DLSU-ALKIEBS, the COSCA or the delasalle.ph are possible avenues where study on communities are possible.

I. Introduction

A. Background/Rationale

CBMS (community based-monitoring system) as a methodology and approach in gathering information about the poor particularly in the Philippines, has been a primary mover in national policy-making. It has slowly generated relevant content and information about poverty in the country that has led to the creation of a very relevant database. It has used systematic techniques to capture credible and truthful information about the level of poverty in the local community locations. But the approach is never a community approach. Hence, this paper intends to study the community-centered development (CCD) process which is participatory in its very nature of generating information. The CCD concept to determine poverty is the primary mover of the study.

Getting the participation of the poor to better understand their situation will help in studying the causes of poverty with the help of the statistics generated by the current CBMS. To understand their situation, it will help to know what their priorities are, what are the choices they make or why they make these choices. Another interesting topic is what makes them happy, at peace and what gives them comfort. It will also help to know how they view things or situations in the country as well as their means of getting information about what is happening in the world.

This study still intends to gather data as far as economics, education, and health will be concerned. But it intends to touch on the metadata of these factors to allow better understanding of the true living conditions these perceived poor are in. And that the approach will require volunteerism and participation among the subjects.

B. Statement of the Problem:

1. Current approach to gathering CBMS data is too centralized that inhibits efficiency;
2. Current approach is focused on gathering quantitative data and limits the room for getting exception data and/or metadata;
3. Current approach relies on basic field survey where a field surveyor is expected to inquire on several number of respondents (1:N) which makes the task highly dependent on the limited numbers of surveyors.

C. Objectives:
1. To use the BEC (basic ecclesiastical community) model of the parish or church as a source of CBMS data;
2. To apply the BEC concepts of community, volunteerism, and involvement in the design of gathering interoperable CBMS data;
3. To develop a community-centered model of a CBMS DLSU-AKIEBS web portal that will serve as the receiving hub of data from the BECs using the web and SMS technologies;
4. To provide a decentralized means of gathering qualitative and exception CBMS data from the BECs.
5. To determine possible issues that may arise in the proposed CCD (community-centered development) model of the DLSU-AKIEBS.

D. Review of Literature:

Literature Topics to be incorporated in the study:
Concepts of community
Community theories – common ground, social presence and community-centered development process, critical mass
The basic ecclesiastical community structure of the Catholic church and methods of communication employed
Definitions of web portals, types of web portals, common services rendered by web portals
Data gathering through mobile computing and/or mobile communication services
SMS for data gathering

E. Significance of the Study:

National Goals/Plans. The study intends to provide an alternative form of generating relevant information that may have not been done by the current CBMS approach. Such information may be used and factored in into the national goals and plans.

National Policies. The study will give light and context to the data gathered by the current CBMS data and better understanding of the state of poverty in the various locations of the country will take place.

Emerging Realities. SMS and web portals as solutions’ tools have been deemed to work in other applications. Further use and study of these solutions’ will empower even the telecommunications industry to help and support the Filipino society. The study will not just become an alternative in generating CBMS data but will also initiate other studies in the areas of psychology, communication studies, SMS data gathering or even community portals.

Community Goals/Plans. Hopefully, the results will empower local communities, parishes and even the local barangays to try and adopt the community web portal.

II. Expected Outputs: (This refers to the products of the investigation which would contribute to and increase the stock of knowledge/technology)

1. A functional prototype of the CBMS DLSU-AKIEBS WEB PORTAL utilizing a community-centered development process model ;
2. Methods of data capture and data gathering from the source to the web portal and the reporting scheme to be employed;
2. A design specifications of the web portal including primary and secondary features;
3. Set of system development options in building the portal and integrating the SMS tools;
4. A set of recommended SMS tools to be used;
A rationale documentation of the web portal including the design specifications following the IT Department acceptable methodologies
5. An implementation plan on how to replicate the method of data gathering in other BECs.

McNurlin and Sprague cited four goals in the new work environment--(1)leverage globally, (2)organize for complexity, (3)work electronically, and (4)handle continuous and discontinuous change.

The first one deals with tapping the tacity knowledge of the workforce, nurturing the workforce with knowledge and prmoting a culture of sharing knowledge. Briefly I felt like the enterprise is wishing to go back to the university if that's the case..

THE DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT WORKFLOW PROJECT

The DMW project is a meaningful activity that entails a proof of management of technology. Everyday different forms, different kinds and different faces of documents are generated. Some are consciously organized, some are not. Examples of these documents are:
o A feature article contributed by a reader and is routed to and from the editorsA thesis abstract
o A birth or marriage certificateA criminal case filed against a person
o A cover page of magazine with various images and layouts
o A project evaluation form
The DMW Project as the culminating requirement in the Moftech course entails the following
1. Finding a small size office that manages documents manually or semi-electronically;
2. Identifying possible shift from manual to digital and/or electronic form of data/image capturing, organizing, storing and retrieving and inclusion of other possible management activities;
3. The document involved requires a routing process to several users;
4. The other management activities involved may be versioning of the document or involved a workflow process/changes or involved archiving;
5. The output requires a process flow analysis of the existing and the proposed, new document workflow using process flow diagrams (everyone is encouraged to use UML);
6. The output is also expected to exhibit proposed screen designs to further appreciate the workflow process;
7. The output should explain the method of file repository, how to capture the digital and printed form of the documents and the online method of storing/viewing of the document;

“The point about ecosystems is that they appear to follow biological rules rather than machine-like rules. They require flexibility because relationships change more frequently; they are more organic. Relationships and coevolution require a different corporate mindset from the command-and-control mindset of the past.”

This is a good insight from McNurlin and Sprague. Business lives are becoming a simbiotic thing. Businesses have to look after each other more than kill each other.

Take the case of Starbucks Phils. In Starbucks, they hire most of these baristas not for the love of coffee but how they can think of more ways to improve, mix and match these coffees. They even give exams to test how good the barista is. So if a barista wears a black apron, she or he is a coffee master.

For the information of everyone, Barako is not a robusta, it's a Liberica, the big bean with strong scent, originally believed from Spain. MIDTERM PROJECT (20%) - A Case Study on the Management of Technology

This case study is a comprehensive analysis of how technology was used (or misused) in a given organizational situation. The study should include how the firm underwent planning, who are the people involved in the planning and decision-making, and the impact to the target users and/or beneficiaries of the system.

The midterm requirement entails looking for a company that recently engaged or was involved in the use or introduction of a new technology or system or set of applications.

FINAL PROJECT (20%) - A Proposed Document Management Workflow

Document Management System or EDMS is one of the relevant, progressive use of technology to handle information resources. In this regard that the focus of the final project is the development of a DMW model/design with an accompanying set of screen deaigns.

The Final Project is focused on one of the most important activity in the organization, management of information resources. And this can be done through document management in a firm. In this project, the study groups are required to look for a unit or an office that is in need of a document management system. The group may opt to use the same office they have used in the midterm requirement.

The study group will have to model the existing and proposed, new workflow (using UML) and create the necessary screen designs.

2. The Planning Approach of the Firm– include the method, cycle and how the plans are formalized
3. Key players in Planning – include the level of accountability of the key players in the decision-making process
4. Present Problems/ Changes – describe the recent technological or process or business changes, issues or problems faced by the work unit.
5. System/Technology Solutions and Issues- describe the application or system or technology employed by the office as a solution to the problems/changes.

Include the major issues faced by the office in the initial implementation of the new system?

6. Assessment of Impact to the Firm – discuss the prevailing perceptions and views of the members of the work unit.

Does the existing planning approach match the current process of decision-making?
Is the solution beneficial to the company or its prospective beneficiaries?
Does the company and the users/beneficiaries have the same or almost the same perceived rewards and benefits with the new system/technologies?
Can the return on investment be covered at an earlier or scheduled time?

PODCAST

Each group is required to come up with a 7-10minute podcast ( including intro music, bloopers, sponsors and closing remarks) in MP3 format. The podcast should discuss the case study in focus following an internet radio or netcast format. The outcome may come as a summarized broadcast assessment or a panel discussion. Listen to TWIT or ZDNet podcasts to have an idea.

The study groups are recommended to use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), a free audio editor and recorder.

The podcast is 50% of the midterm grade requirement and the basis of the class open forum. No podcast on the deadline means no class case presentation. The podcast may be loaded in your music player or cellphone and should be in MP3 format, labeled properly. The whole class will listen to the podcast. Clarity of the output is important and will allow other people to understand the discussion better. Use of Filipino statements are allowed to give emphasis to a point in the discussion or to entice listeners.

Appropriate references and/or links to relevant sites may be included.

The objective of this requirement is to encourage research on various IM solutions and analytical group discussions on relevant IM resource trend.
